Ice, ice, baby!

Writer's Workshop Prompt #4: Show us the last thing you purchased.

I'm going to yet again take literary (?) liberties with this prompt from the ever-creative and always-forgiving Mama Kat.
The last thing I purchased, besides the medium decaf skim latte I acquire most mornings, was a 10-pound bag of ice from my local convenience store. No, I wasn't in need of stocking the cooler, nor did I set up a neighborhood lemonade stand (to my knowledge, anyway). The ice-maker on my fridge is broken (long story) and we have no ice trays (even longer story). And I was in need of a lot of ice, in a big way.
Hoda and Kathy Lee did it. President Bush did it. Former Packers QB Brett Favre did it. And I planned to do it, too.
Ella Numera Una challenged me. She broke all the rules and didn't even step into a cold shower for this one. The kid rationalized that since she had undertaken a Polar Bear Plunge in recent months, she was somehow exempt.
She also decided that she would donate her hundred bucks to the Alzheimer's Association, in memory of her grandmother. My Mom fought the good fight, but lost it a few years ago.
On my way back from the gym, I bought the ice. I dumped half the bag in a bucket and filled the tub to the top with a garden hose. I set myself up in one of our Adirondack chairs out back. I made some kind of a speech, and then dumped the cold concoction on my head.
Yes, the ice bath was beyond chilly, and even elicited some high-pitched shrieks I'd never heard before.
Ella Numera Dos did the taping honors. I challenged one of Una's friends, one of my former students, and one of my neighbors. They'll soon feel the thrill of the chill, I'm certain.
The whole Ice Bucket deal has been lauded as well as laughed at. Yes, it's silly on a certain level, but I believe the exercise also forges a community-wide connection. I took the Ice Bucket Challenge, but I'm donating as well. It warms my heart that so many feel the same way.

I loved your shrieks and screams at the end, and your facial expressions. :)

I've heard this ALS Ice bucket challenge going around this week and it seems that it is also featured in some hot variety show on Korean TV. Good to hear that you stood up and took the challenge. I don't think I will be daring enough to do so.

This is so great! I did it too and was also shocked at my own screaming! I think I took us all by surprise. ;)

How long did it take you to warm up after the ice bath? BRRRRRRR...

I'm glad you still donated. It is a worthy cause. M
