After the Storm

After the Storm

I woke up yesterday morning to howling winds & driving rain. Oh, and of course, the kicker...5 minutes after hitting the ground running, the power went out.

As Mr. Fairway & I grabbed flashlights & lit candles (yes, we had several of each handy...go figure!), I had the strangest sensation. Felt as if I were in the middle of a summer thunderstorm. A cool front apparently triggered a warm front, resulting in winds in excess of 50 mph, temps close to 70 degrees & thunderboomers crashing overhead.

I've never~ever, in my pea-pickin' life~had to take a shower & get ready for work in the quasi-dark. The eerieness was accented by the flashlight beam that reflected thru the shower curtain & the flickering candles standing watch on the toilet tank.

Spent most of the day feeling "un-put together," as my Mom, Baba, would have said. When I left work yesterday (no late hours for moi~I was out by the door by 4 p.m.!), temps still hovered around 50-ish & the sun poked thru fair-weather cumulus.

An out-of-body experience, I'd say. Focused, in the snap above, on the raindrops pelting my classroom windows, to preserve the effect.

I love the impressionistic feeling of this photo. And I have taken more cold showers by candle light than I care to remember. I used to live in the land of finicky electricity.

Great photo--'impressionistic' as quilly said, is right. But I also really love your mom's phrase, 'un-put together'! How accurate that description is for some days! I shall remember that one...

Oh gosh, you should come and live in South Africa. Last year we had the beast called power shedding which resulted in many hours without electricity. But just on any regular day a thunderstorm (and we get a lot!) or not can result in a power failure.

Your post has me feeling all PTSD.

It brought back memories of the Louisville-hurricane-windstorm-2008 when I had no power at my house for seven very long days.

I had the market cornered on un-put together that week!

I have a skylight in my bathroom and still turn the lights on to shower. I don't like dark showers either.

I hope you get some kinder, gentler weather very soon.

The snap is a perfect depiction of wet, winter weather.

Love the photo ... reading your post reminds me (yet again) how happy I am to be retired. My mem'ries of rainy dayz in the classroom have flooded my consciousness all of a sudden and I'm reminding myself to breathe. Hope your day got better ;-)
Hugs and blessings,

Yep, the weather is weird all over, huh? We had a similar storm yesterday, but woke up to snow today. I'm so ready for spring!

It's such a good metaphor. Everything does seem a little blurry after a storm.

We lost power last summer after a storm and it was out for 4 days. It was the longest 4 days of my life.

The pic is cool though. It makes me miss the rain.

I'm glad our power has been dependable because I only have eight hours of oxygen in backup tanks.
