Take a Sad Song and Make It Better

Our Yearbook sometimes asks the seniors for Memorable Quotes, which are then reprinted to cement the memories of that year's graduating class. One of our Yearbook Cherubs was cleaning out the Senior Editor file drawer in the Journalism Suite at the beginning of this school year, and came upon this, neatly printed in small--but firm--letters:

"I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all just floatin' accidental--like on a breeze."

--Forrest Gump

Following the citation crediting Mr. Gump were the words "submitted by Leslie Sherman." Leslie graduated from Our Humble High School in 2005. She died a year ago today in her French classroom (she was fixin' to sign up for Russian, too, the next semester) on the second floor of Virginia Tech's Norris Hall. We will remember Norris Hall and what happened there. We will remember Leslie and the joy she brought to our lives.

This pic was taken at the Marine Corps Marathon in DC in October '06. Leslie's good friend, Becca, also a VT student and one of our Former Yearbook Cherubs, was waiting with the sign that said, "Run, Leslie, Run!" A paraphrase, of course, from "Forrest Gump," Leslie's favorite movie. BTW, Leslie finished the Marathon in 4 hours and change. She was training for the next New York Marathon when she died. We'll keep on truckin', Leslie--we promise.
